The Udzungwa Landscape

MACCO works primarily in the Udzungwa Mountains and surrounding communities in south-central Tanzania, within the globally important Eastern Arc Mountains. The Eastern Arc Mountains are part of one of the 36 Biodiversity Hotspots identified by Conservation International: the Eastern Afromontane Biodiversity Hotspot.

Why it matters

  • The Udzungwa Mountains contain a remarkable diversity of forests, woodlands and grasslands and support exceptional numbers of endemic species.
  • At the same time, the wider landscape provides water, supports agriculture, contributes to energy production and sustains the livelihoods of surrounding communities.
  • Protecting biodiversity therefore also means protecting the ecological systems on which people depend.

MACCO works with partners to develop integrated, landscape-level solutions combining biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, environmental education, local governance and long-term planning under the Udzungwa Landscape Strategy (ULS) (launched in 2023/2024).
