ECO-TOURISM

Eco-tourism is a key component of MACCO’s approach to conservation and community development, linking environmental protection with local economic benefits and education. By promoting responsible travel experiences, it supports both ecosystem conservation and community livelihoods.

Since 2013, MACCO has developed eco-tourism activities in Tanzania, and after a pause due to COVID-19, the programme was successfully relaunched in 2024. Between 2024 and 2025, five eco-tours brought 64 Italian visitors to Tanzania to experience MACCO’s community-based

conservation initiatives.

Participants visited villages, schools, and the Udzungwa Mountains, gaining direct insight into local conservation and development efforts. The itineraries also included visits to Ruaha National Park and Zanzibar, offering a diverse and sustainable experience of Tanzania’s landscapes and cultures.

Each tour contributes financially to MACCO’s projects, making eco-tourism both a source of awareness and a mechanism for fundraising. The programme is implemented in partnership with Italian and local organisations, ensuring meaningful exchange between visitors and communities.

Eco-tourism continues to play an important role in connecting international audiences with conservation challenges and community-driven solutions in Tanzania.
