At MACCO we believe education is key to building a more sustainable future. Our environmental education programme engages young people, helping them understand their environment and become the next generation of conservation leaders.
Through school-based initiatives, we:
- Raise awareness of biodiversity and sustainability
- Promote practical solutions to local environmental challenges
- Encourage active, hands-on learning
- Support teachers with training and resources
Our activities in school include:
- Delivering environmental education in 32 classrooms across 18 schools
- Supporting and connecting school environmental clubs to encourage peer learning and collaboration
- Organizing educational field visits to the park and other key conservation sites
- Conducting student assessments and providing teacher training to improve teaching quality
- Promoting international school partnerships, hands-on learning activities, and the construction of mud stoves in schools
- Coordinating World Environment Day celebrations to raise awareness and community engagement
- Carrying out regular monitoring and evaluation to inform learning and programme improvements
School Programmes & Practical Learning
We bring environmental education to life through hands-on initiatives such as:
- School gardens and composting
- Tree planting and agroforestry
- Recycling and sustainable practices
- Energy-efficient cooking solutions
These activities not only strengthen learning but also improve nutrition, reduce resource use, and promote sustainable habits within schools and communities.
Community Impact
Our programs reach thousands of students and hundreds of teachers, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond schools into families and communities.
By combining education with practical action, we foster long-term behavioral change—building stronger, more resilient communities that are actively engaged in protecting their environment.
Through these efforts, MACCO connects conservation with everyday life, ensuring that both people and nature can thrive together
Environmental education for the ULS
Through the Udzungwa Landscape Strategy – ULS, we deliver structured environmental education programs in primary schools, equipping teachers with practical tools and resources to lead engaging learning activities.
Environmental clubs provide students with a space for peer learning, raising awareness and encouraging active participation in conservation. These initiatives reach large numbers of students, building knowledge, responsibility, and a strong connection to their local environment.
Regular assessments show clear improvements in students’ understanding of key environmental issues, demonstrating the impact of combining education with hands-on engagement.
